February Meeting and events
1. Our February PFLAG meeting and Movie Night will be Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7:00 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Jackson. Bruce will bring two or three short films for us to enjoy and discuss. One might even be a love story, appropriate for Valentine’s Day! Bring a Valentine snack to share if you wish.
2. Former PFLAG secretary and activist Chuck Meade and his partner Bruce will be having an official ceremony for a legal Civil Union in the state of Delaware. The ceremony will be on the anniversary of their commitment two years ago. Bruce P will be attending, and taking cards and well-wishes from anyone who brings them to our meeting, so make a note to bring a card with you. Chuck has been very involved with Marriage Equality Delaware.
3. From Julie Nemecek: St. John’s United Church of Christ is now an official Welcoming and Affirming Congregation, the first in the city of Jackson and only the second in the area (Universalist Unitarian Church of east Liberty went through this process a few years ago.) Cause for celebration!
4. It’s time for Peace Prom! This wonderful event for LGBT youth and their allies will be held earlier this year, March 24 , at St. John’s UCC. There is a Facebook Site up: Peace Prom 2012 A Black and White Ball
PFLAG will be responsible for food for the evening. Monetary donations will also be accepted. Please respond to this e-mail and we will tell you how to proceed. Last year nearly 150 kids attended and they had a terrific time!
5. A meeting was held last Monday of Jackson Together, a coalition of people and organizations hoping to pass an inclusive civil rights ordinance for the city of Jackson. We have a real possibility of passing an ordinance this time, and people are getting more organized. The next meeting of this group is February 27 at 6:00 PM at the East Michigan library branch. A recent phone survey showed 63% of people in Jackson are in favor of non-discrimination in housing and employment in Jackson.

6. New Group for Trans Support: There is interest in forming a new group, as an adjunct to PFLAG, to offer support and socializing in a safe environment for transgender individuals in the area. This group could meet with PFLAG, and also possibly at people’s homes for casual events for fun. 7.Save the Date: Regional PFLAG Conference to be held in Cleveland in September! These larger conferences are the best way to meet more people from PFLAG, to learn new things and get your batteries recharged! This from our Regional Director, Dan Tepfer:
