PFLAG National blew into the Windy City on Thursday, June 2nd for its first annual PFLAG National Celebrates the Heartland: Chicago event.
Held at Kimpton Hotel’s beautiful Hotel Palomar, PFLAG members from all over the greater Chicagoloand area attended to celebrate three important figures in advancing the cause for LGBT equality in Chicago at the community, city and state levels. Kim Hunt, Executive Director of Affinity Community Services, was honored for her work at the community level. Chicago Police Department LGBT Liaison, Officer Jose Rios, works tirelessly all over the city of Chicago and beyond as a voice for LGBT people, and Illinois State Representative Greg Harris worked tirelessly to make civil unions a reality for same-sex couples in the state of Illinois.
Actor/comedian Hal Sparks hosted the evening. Hal was as inspiring as he was hilarious; he is an outspoken straight ally who hails from the city of Chicago, so his connection to the event – both geographically and for the cause – was a great match!
Our co-hosts for the event, PFLAG National President Emeritus John R. Cepek and his wife, Char, also had the crowd celebrating the civil unions of a number of couples who joined us for the evening.
It was a night to remember…and we look forward to another celebration of Chicago in 2012.
