2012 Straight for Equality in the Workplace Awardee:
KPMG

KPMG LLP, the U.S. audit, tax, and advisory firm, has never been shy about its commitment to the full inclusion of GLBT employees. In their effort to move equality forward in the workplace, KPMG has created a roadmap to equality for its industry.

In 1993, KPMG added sexual orientation to its EEO Policy, and added gender identity in 2005. The organization was also among the first in its industry to offer same-sex domestic partner benefits to its employees.

In 2012, KPMG raised the stakes even further when leadership announced that it will offer its U.S.-based GLBT partners and employees tax offsets for additional federal and state tax costs incurred when they pay for same-sex domestic partners’ medical benefits.

The organization also offers a self-ID option in its hiring and annual review process—a key new trend in inclusion work—and hosts a mentorship program for its GLBT employees.

But the work KPMG does to include and engage its GLBT and ally employees doesn’t end at policies.

Through its Employee Resource Group, PRIDE@KPMG, KPMG celebrates Pride month in all of its offices each June. But, PRIDE@KPMG’s commitment reaches past June and is seen year-round through the group’s sponsorship of educational opportunities for employees in partnership with PFLAG National. To date, more than 30 programs have been offered to employees nationwide.

Beyond its offices, KPMG has been a source of support to the GLBT community, with sponsorships for Out & Equal, PFLAG National, The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, GLSEN, and the LGBT Giving Network (Canada).

KPMG has been recognized for its accomplishments by a wide variety of organizations, including the Human Rights Campaign, with whom they have had a perfect score of 100% on the Corporate Equality Index for the past eight years, and by whom they were identified as one of the “Best Places to Work” in 2012. . In 2009, KPMG was named International Corporation of the Year by the Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. In 2011, DiversityInc magazine gave KPMG top ranking in the list of the Top 10 Companies for LGBT Employees, and Work Life Matters magazine put KPMG in their list of Top Companies for LGBT Equality.

Accepting the 2012 Straight for Equality in the Workplace award is John Veihmeyer, Chairman and CEO of KPMG LLP, and Chairman of the Americas Region for KPMG International. He has held key leadership positions during his 34-year career with KPMG, and currently serves as client service partner for several of KPMG’s largest clients.

In 2009 and 2010, Mr. Veihmeyer was named one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting by Accounting Today magazine. He is a member of the Partnership for New York City, Notre Dame Mendoza College Business Advisory Council, the Kennedy Center Corporate Fund Board, a Co-Chair of CEOs Against Cancer, Board member of Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy, and a member of Business-Higher Education Forum.
